Four in the morning, and Papa is already at the bench. The small thing with wings and two points of light isn’t finished so much as done deciding, and in six hours it belongs to his granddaughter. What he doesn’t know yet is what it will turn out to weigh.

By her second morning in San Pedro Necta, Renee had stopped flinching every time the rooster outside Lucia’s window declared it was somehow already time to get up, and her legs no longer complained about the climb from the church the way they had the evening the team arrived. She’d spent the day before trailing Lucia through the village – carrying baskets at the market, mangling a purchase of limes, half-following a conversation between women hanging wash – while the rest of the Riverside Wesleyan team scattered to chores of their own. Sofia Reyes, the quiet high school senior Renee had been partnered with for the two weeks, had spent the afternoon measuring the half-finished school roof. Jenna Martinez had ducked in and out of the church office with Pastor Morales, sorting supply lists and asking after people she’d known since she was small.
By evening, dinner smelled like beans and woodsmoke before Renee even reached the door of Rosa’s house.
