The Carter Family Series
by B. A. Lumin
Three siblings, one backyard workshop, and the questions curious kids never stop asking.

Read them in order
Each book follows the Carter siblings: Candi, Renee and Scott. Begin with Book 1.

Whispers in the Workshop
It will tell her when to look. Never what to see.
On the morning of her tenth birthday, Candi Carter’s grandfather hands her a small glowing creature no bigger than a hair clip. Whisper has a rule of its own, and it states it the moment they meet: I will signal timing. I will not supply answers. Those are different tools.
Something is happening in the backyard. Dad keeps disappearing after midnight. A blue light glows from his pocket when he thinks no one’s looking. And a date is circled on the family calendar in red ink: C-Day. Candi is going to find out what it means — with or without her family’s permission, and with or without Whisper’s help.
But some things Whisper won’t budge on, not even when Candi is losing in front of the whole school and begging for just one letter, just one answer, just this once. And some things nobody has to explain at all — like why her sister spent a year secretly painting the sky above a half-built dome, star by star, until it matched the exact night Candi was born.

The Mission Call
A bridge. Not a crutch.
Renee Carter is thirteen — and the youngest person her church has ever sent on a mission trip.
She has been two different girls: the one her friends expected at every pool party and non-negotiable summer plan, and the one who sat in the back of the mission committee meeting with a notebook full of questions the adults hadn’t thought to ask yet. When a spot opens up on the summer trip to San Pedro Necta, Guatemala — a trip that has never taken anyone younger than sixteen — Renee sets out to prove her questions were never just for show.
Her grandfather sends her off with something only he could build: a leather-bound device that translates, journals, and teaches — but never spies, and never decides for her. “A bridge, not a crutch,” he tells her.
By the end of her first day in San Pedro Necta — a woman named Rosa telling her Tu español es bueno (your Spanish is good) and meaning it, cement waiting to be mixed at 7:30 the next morning — Renee is carrying something bigger than anything a device could hold.

Not a Dinosaur Bone
It’s not a dinosaur bone. It’s something even better.
Scott Carter is eight years old, and he is absolutely certain he’s found a dinosaur bone in Willow Creek.
He hasn’t. What’s waiting in the mud behind his house is an ammonite — a real marine fossil, 380 million years old, far older than the dinosaurs — and once Scott stops trying to prove everyone wrong and starts learning to look properly, it turns out to be even better.
Armed with a hand-drawn map, his sister’s coordinate system, and the Carter Explorer his grandfather built just for him, Scott leads his whole third-grade class on a real fossil expedition. He’s so absorbed in the discovery that he loses track of a classmate’s little brother, who wanders straight toward one of the very holes Scott had warned everyone about.
And there’s still the other thing he found while mapping the creek: a dark, lumpy rock, half-buried in the roots of a big oak, far too heavy for its size. It takes a museum paleontologist, a family devotion about harvests and patience, and one very public afternoon at the Founder’s Day festival before Scott finally gets his answers — confirmed, real, and entirely his.

Rising Stakes
Fifteen members by October. One broken promise. And a creek that just got impossible to explain away.
Candi Carter is home from two weeks at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center with real data, a stubborn case of homesickness, and one plan: build a real astronomy club before the year is out.
The Carter Explorers Club needs fifteen members by October — and just when kids finally start showing up, an accident wrecks the club’s best telescope. Desperate not to lose them, Candi does the one thing she promised herself she wouldn’t: turn to Whisper, her family’s secret invention, for a fix that costs her a promise to the prickliest neighbor on the street.
She’s not the only Carter chasing a mystery. Her little brother Scott has found something strange buried in Willow Creek — an oily, iridescent lump that Whisper’s readings say is nothing that belongs in a creek. While Candi works to win back a neighbor, rebuild a telescope, and turn her rival, Madison, into a real teammate, the creek keeps handing her family evidence nobody knows what to do with yet.
By the night the whole neighborhood shows up for one make-or-break star party, Candi has kept a promise, earned an answer, and helped her family gather proof — real, undeniable, and only the beginning.
